Zuma Thick Hot Chocolate is extremely thick and great to drink, sip or dip with churros or biscotti.
With warmer weather on the horizon our minds have turned to churros; tasty deep fried sticks of dough, sugar sprinkled and served with warm chocolate for dipping, have long been the working man’s breakfast or after-party snack of choice in Spain.
History is divided on how exactly churros came to exist but our preferred version insists they were the invention of nomadic Spanish shepherds. Living high in the mountains with no easy access to bakeries, Spanish shepherds supposedly created churros, because they batter was simple to make and they were simple to cook in a frying pan over an open fire. Making this version all the more believeable is the fact that there is a breed of sheep called the “Navajo-Churro” which have horns that resemble the fried pastries.
Another story argues that Portuguese sailors discovered a similar food in Northern China called “You Tiao” which they brought it back with them. The Spanish learned of the new culinary treat from their neighbors and made it their own by passing the dough through a star-shaped nozzle which gives the churro its signature ridges.
Whether Spanish shepherds or Portuguese sailors get the credit for inventing the churro, the modern day churro has spread across the globe undergoing various reincarnations. Straight or spiral-shaped, with or without a dusting of cinnamon and sugar, we prefer ours dipped into a mug of Zuma Thick Hot Chocolate, sitting out on a terrace, watching the world go by.
