Why Is Salted Caramel So Popular? A Café Guide to the Flavour That Keeps Selling All Year Round

Some flavour trends come and go.

Others find a permanent place on café menus.

Salted caramel sits firmly in the second category. More than a decade after becoming a menu favourite, customers are still ordering it in coffees, hot chocolates, milkshakes and desserts.

Which raises an interesting question:

Why has salted caramel remained one of the most popular flavour combinations for over a decade?

The answer comes down to balance.

It offers something many flavours struggle to achieve: sweetness, richness and complexity all in one sip. Familiar enough to feel comforting, but interesting enough to keep customers coming back.

Why Salted Caramel Works So Well In Drinks

At first glance, the combination seems simple.

Sweet caramel. A pinch of salt.

But together, they create something much more interesting.

Salt has a remarkable ability to enhance flavour. It lifts sweetness without making a drink taste sweeter and helps bring out deeper notes that might otherwise go unnoticed.

In caramel, that means more depth, more richness and more contrast.

The result is a flavour profile that feels balanced rather than one-dimensional.

That balance is a big part of why salted caramel continues to resonate with customers. It satisfies those looking for something indulgent without becoming overly sweet.

From Coffee to Chocolate: A Natural Pairing

Salted caramel first found its place in cafĂ©s through flavoured coffees, but it didn’t stay there for long.

The flavour works particularly well with chocolate.

Chocolate brings depth and richness. Caramel adds sweetness and warmth. Salt ties everything together, sharpening flavours and creating a more rounded drinking experience.

It’s a combination that feels indulgent yet balanced, making it a natural fit for hot chocolates, iced drinks and frappĂ©s alike.

For cafĂ©s, that’s a powerful combination. One flavour that can work across multiple drink formats and appeal to a broad range of customers.

Hot or Iced? Why Salted Caramel Works All Year Round

While hot chocolate often gets associated with colder months, customer habits have changed.

Iced drinks have become a year-round category, and indulgent flavours are no longer reserved for winter.

That’s one of the reasons salted caramel continues to perform so well.

Served hot, it feels comforting and rich. Served over ice, it becomes smooth, refreshing and surprisingly moreish.

In fact, some of the best salted caramel drinks require very little else. When the balance is right, the flavour can stand confidently on its own without needing additional syrups or toppings.

For cafés, that means a flavour that transitions easily through the seasons rather than appearing for a few months and disappearing again.

Why Cornish Sea Salt Makes a Difference

Not all salt delivers the same result.

The type of salt used can have a significant impact on how a drink tastes, particularly when it plays such an important role in the overall flavour profile.

That’s why we chose Cornish Sea Salt for our Zuma Salted Caramel Dark Hot Chocolate.

Harvested from the Cornish coast, it brings a clean mineral character that complements rather than overwhelms the chocolate and caramel.

Combined with 36% cocoa, it creates a drink that’s more savoury than sweet, allowing the cocoa and caramel to work together while the sea salt adds structure and complexity.

The result is a flavour that’s bold yet balanced. Rich enough to feel indulgent, but refined enough to keep customers coming back for another sip.
